There may not have been gold, but Jessica Oji delivered a performance that felt just as special for Team Nigeria.
The 19-year-old Nigerian-American, competing in her first-ever Commonwealth Games for Nigeria, produced a brilliant throw of 17.87 metres to win silver in the women’s shot put final, adding another medal to Team Nigeria’s impressive campaign in Glasgow.
Oji finished behind reigning world-class Canadian thrower Sarah Mitton, who claimed gold with 19.88m, while Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron settled for bronze after also throwing 17.87m, with Oji securing silver on countback.
For the young Nigerian, the silver medal is another landmark achievement in what has been a remarkable breakthrough season.
Born and raised in the United States, Oji switched her international allegiance to Nigeria earlier this year and has wasted no time making an impact. The University of Pennsylvania athlete already holds the Nigerian shot put record and has emerged as one of Africa’s brightest young field-event talents after a string of record-breaking performances during the American collegiate season.
Her medal in Glasgow is further proof that Nigeria’s future in the throwing events is in safe hands.
At just 19 years old, Oji showed composure beyond her years against an experienced field, standing on the Commonwealth Games podium in only her debut appearance for Team Nigeria.
Her silver also continues an outstanding campaign for Nigeria, which has seen athletes excel in para powerlifting, weightlifting, athletics and para athletics.
