Unity Cup 2026: Friday Ekpo Urges Super Eagles Coaches To Trust NPFL Players And Be Patient

Former Nigeria international Friday Ekpo has called on the Super Eagles coaching crew to give home-based players meaningful opportunities during the upcoming Unity Cup tournament.

Speaking on the inclusion of several Nigeria Premier Football League stars in the squad, Ekpo stressed that the local players must be allowed to settle gradually into the national team environment.

“The home-based players need proper opportunities,” Ekpo said.

According to the former Super Eagles midfielder, the NPFL stars should not face excessive criticism whenever they make mistakes during the competition.

“Mistakes are part of the learning process,” he implied.

Ekpo explained that adapting to the pressure and expectations of international football takes time, especially for players receiving their first call-ups.

“They need encouragement, not too much pressure,” he noted.

The former international also urged the senior players within the squad to help guide and support the younger and less experienced teammates throughout the tournament.

“The experienced players must support them,” he added.

Nigeria’s Unity Cup campaign is expected to serve as a major evaluation platform for coach Eric Chelle as he continues rebuilding the Super Eagles squad.

“This is an important opportunity for the local players,” many football observers believe.

Ekpo remains hopeful that the tournament can help change perceptions surrounding home-based footballers if they receive proper support and confidence.

“The talent is definitely there,” he stressed.

For the former Super Eagles midfielder, the message is clear.

Be patient with the NPFL players.

Allow them grow into the team.

And create the right environment for development.

Because confidence and support are essential for players adjusting to international football.
