Umar Abubakar’s Super Eagles’ Debut Described As ‘Remarkable Milestone’ For Kano-born Attacker

FC Famalicão of Portugal attacker, Umar Abubakar’s debut with the Super Eagles has been described as a ‘remarkable milestone,’ especially as he got an assist on a last ditch equaliser that gave Nigeria a 3-3 draw, Sports247 reports.

He has also found more accolades coming his way, sequel to his sterling offensive efforts after getting off Nigeria’s bench in the 70th minute to replace Aderemi Adeoye during an international friendly away to Russia.

Abubakar, who played for the Golden Eaglets at the 2023 Africa U17 Cup of Nations in Algeria, got into the highlights with his assist that helped Akor Adams equalise for Nigeria in the 94th minute of Tuesday’s match.

With Abubakar’s effort having played a key role in the Super Eagles’ resurgence and ability to draw level from 3-1 down, he is now enjoying a flush of accolades from insatiable Nigerian football fans, but the youngster is saying calm about his prospects into the future.

The 20-year-old product of Footwork FC of Abuja, who signed for Jong Gent of Belgium in 2024 and was their top scorer last season, with 21 goals in 26 matches, moved to Famalicão on July 15th, 2025 in a five-year contract, which could now be upgraded due to his surge as a full-fledged international.

This much was inferred by transfer expert and media guru, Usman Bature, who noted in a post on social media that Tuesday’s debut for the lad from Kano State is a huge step forward in his career, with several rewards sure to follow him soon.

Bature posted with superlatives, “The FC Famalicão forward, who currently plays in Portugal, was introduced during Nigeria’s international friendly against Russia, earning his first appearance for the senior national team.

“Umar contributed, as the Super Eagles staged a dramatic comeback, with Akor Adams scoring a late equaliser to rescue a thrilling 3-3 draw. From Footwork FC Abuja to Portugal and now the Super Eagles of Nigeria, a remarkable milestone for the Kano-born talent.”

Sports247 reports further that Abubakar will now hope to be part of the Eagles’ next competitive outing, when they play home and away against Tanzania at the restart of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in November.
