Nigerian puller Ujunwa Ajayi delivered a remarkable performance at the African Armwrestling Championship 2026 in Accra, winning two gold medals in the Master Women 70kg category.
Ajayi dominated both the right-hand and left-hand events, defeating a fellow Nigerian opponent in both finals to secure top honours and confirm her qualification for the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt.
Her achievement marks a significant milestone in what has been a rapid rise in the sport. Having only taken up armwrestling a year ago in Ibadan during an open championship, Ajayi has quickly established herself as a formidable force in her category.
In addition to her success in the 70kg division, she also competed in the Master Women 75kg category, further demonstrating her versatility and competitive drive.
Speaking after her victory with Sports247, Ajayi expressed satisfaction with her performance while setting her sights on future success.
“I feel good and need to focus more on training to compete ahead of the All African Games to claim gold for Nigeria,” she said.
Her double gold triumph not only highlights her personal dedication and growth but also reinforces Nigeria’s strength in the sport at the continental level. With qualification secured, Ajayi will now turn her attention to preparations for Cairo, where she aims to replicate her success on an even bigger stage.
As the championship continues to showcase emerging talents, Ajayi’s story stands out as an inspiring example of rapid development, determination, and the rewards of commitment in competitive sports.
