Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has been cleared to make his competitive debut for Ajax after UEFA confirmed his registration for Thursday’s UEFA Conference League third qualifying-round clash against Shelbourne.

The development ends the uncertainty surrounding the Nigerian forward’s availability for Ajax’s next European assignment and opens the door for him to make his first competitive appearance in the famous red-and-white shirt.
Arokodare completed his move to Ajax from Wolverhampton Wanderers last week on a season-long loan deal, with the Dutch giants securing an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
His arrival represents a return to Dutch football for the 25-year-old, who previously developed his reputation in Europe before moving to Belgium and subsequently earning a transfer to the Premier League.
Arokodare was unavailable for Ajax’s previous Conference League qualifier against Vojvodina because his transfer was completed too late for him to be registered for the tie.
That situation has now changed, with the striker included in Ajax’s UEFA squad for the next stage of the competition. He is consequently available for selection when Ajax welcome Shelbourne on Thursday.
The opportunity comes at an important stage of Arokodare’s career.
The imposing forward endured a relatively difficult first season in England but still managed to score six goals across competitions for Wolves during the 2025/26 campaign.
Before his move to England, however, Arokodare had established himself as one of the most dangerous strikers in Belgian football.
His breakthrough came at KRC Genk, where he enjoyed a prolific 2024/25 campaign and finished as the Belgian Pro League’s leading goalscorer. His goalscoring record and physical presence subsequently attracted interest from Wolves.
While his opportunities in England were more limited than anticipated, Ajax’s decision to bring him back to the Netherlands provides the Nigerian with another platform to demonstrate his qualities.
Standing at around 1.97 metres, Arokodare offers Ajax a different attacking profile, particularly through his aerial strength, physicality and ability to operate as a traditional centre-forward.
The striker has already offered Ajax supporters an early glimpse of his potential, scoring during the club’s preparations after completing his move.
Although that goal came in an unofficial fixture, it provided an encouraging start to his new chapter.
Now, the stakes are considerably higher.
Thursday’s meeting with Shelbourne could give Arokodare his first opportunity to translate that early promise into a competitive performance and begin his Ajax career on the European stage.
For the Nigerian international, the UEFA clearance could therefore prove significant as he seeks to revive his momentum, establish himself in Ajax’s attacking plans and potentially turn his loan spell into a permanent move.
