The Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is making projections based on optimism that experience gained by the country’s track and field contingent at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland will extend into the World Athletics U20 Championship in Oregon, USA.
Sports247 reports that the AFN’s projections are boosted by the presence of Glasgow 2026 women’s shot put silver medallist, Jessica Oji, and teenage sprinter, Miracle Ezechukwu, in the country’s team to the global championship, which will begin on Wednesday.
Ezechukwu, who reached the women’s 100 metres semi-finals in Glasgow and was part of the Nigerian female 4×100m team that qualified for the final, will feature in the 100m and 200m events as well as run with the relay squad, while Oji will compete in both shot put and discus.
Rosemary Nwankwo and Lucy Nwankwo join Ezechukwu in the women’s 100m, with Success Oyibu and Tejiri Praise Ugoh also in the 200m, while Becky Ebiyadi, Faith Ezechukwu and Jecinta Lawrence will feature in the women’s 400m, with Chika Bakwunye in the 100m hurdles.
The women’s 4x100m has Miracle Ezechukwu, Rosemary Nwankwo, Lucy Nwankwo, Success Oyibu and Chika Bakwunye; with Becky Ebiyadi, Faith Ezechukwu, Jecinta Lawrence and Success Oyibu for the 4x400m; while Gift Bright, Perfect Faye, Tejiri Godwin, Precious Opinion and David Udoh are for the men’s 4x100m.
Tejiri Godwin will further contest the 100m with Gift Bright, who will also run in the 200m alongside Perfect Faye, while David Udoh will compete in the 400m and Precious Opinion in triple jump during this week’s championship, which represents a vital platform for Nigeria’s next generation of athletics stars.
The AFN expressed confidence that the athletes will be inspired by Team Nigeria’s performances at the Glasgow Games and deliver impressive results in Oregon, as the country continues to strengthen its progression from junior development into senior international competitions.
