South African athlete Aiden Smith has strongly criticised conditions at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, describing the treatment of athletes as disappointing and below expectations for a continental competition of such importance.
Speaking after arriving for the championships, Smith expressed frustration over the standard of accommodation and facilities provided to competitors.
“The conditions are unacceptable,” he said.
According to the South African athlete, he expected far better organisation and athlete welfare given the prestige attached to the championships.
“I expected much higher standards,” he implied.
Smith specifically pointed to concerns surrounding accommodation arrangements and overall athlete treatment during the event.
“The facilities have been disappointing,” he noted.
Despite the criticism, the athlete maintained a positive outlook and revealed that he still intends to enjoy aspects of his stay in Ghana outside competition.
“I’ll still explore Ghana,” he added.
Smith also expressed hope that organisers would address the concerns and improve conditions moving forward.
“I hope things get better,” he stressed.
The complaints have added to wider conversations about athlete welfare and event management standards at major continental competitions.
“Athletes deserve proper treatment,” many observers continue to argue.
As the championships continue, organisers are now under increased pressure to respond to the growing concerns.
For Smith, the message is clear.
Elite athletes deserve better conditions.
Major championships require higher standards.
And athlete welfare must remain a priority.
Because world-class competitions should provide world-class treatment for competitors.
