Team Nigeria Kicks Off Medal Hunt with Double Silver At African School Games

Team Nigeria has made a bold entrance at the ongoing African School Games in Annaba, Algeria, by clinching two silver medals in rapid succession—marking a promising start to what could be a landmark outing for the nation’s young athletes.

The country’s first medal came in the badminton mixed event, where Nigeria battled host nation Algeria in a gripping final showdown on Tuesday. Despite falling short, the Nigerian side delivered a gutsy performance that pushed the hosts to their limits, drawing applause from the partisan crowd for their gallant effort.

Shortly after, the girls’ 3×3 basketball team added a second silver to Nigeria’s medal tally following a nerve-wracking 11–12 loss to Rwanda in the final. Played at the scenic Chappi Beach basketball court, the game saw Nigeria mount a fierce comeback in the dying minutes, falling just one point short of gold. Earlier in the semifinals, the girls had edged past Benin Republic to secure their place in the final.

The medals were presented by Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President, Engr. Habu Gumel, who praised the athletes for their courage and cohesion. “This is the kind of spirit we want to see at every level—strong, united, and fearless,” Gumel said during the brief ceremony.

These early podium finishes have set the tone for Nigeria’s campaign in Algeria and sent a clear message: the nation is not here to participate, but to dominate.

With athletics set to begin on Friday, August 1, attention now turns to sprint sensation Miracle Ezechukwu, the reigning African U18 champion in both the 100m and 200m events. Backed by a promising cast of track talents, Ezechukwu is tipped to lead a medal charge that could see Nigeria climb rapidly up the medal table.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has also weighed in, commending the young athletes and reaffirming its commitment to grassroots sports development. “This is the fruit of investment in youth sports. These kids are not just competing—they are inspiring,” an NSC statement read.

As the African School Games heat up, Nigeria’s athletes are proving that the future of the nation’s sports is not only bright—it’s already shining.
