Team Edo Eyes Top Finish at Gateway Games as Medal Tally Rises – Chikere

Executive Director of Sports Development and Operation, Edo State, Mrs. Sabina Chikere, has expressed strong optimism that Team Edo will finish among the top three at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games, currently held in Ogun State.

With 115 medals already secured — 19 gold, 49 silver, and 47 bronze — Team Edo currently sits among the top five on the medal table. Chikere believes the momentum is building steadily as more sporting events are yet to be concluded.

“Cricket, we got the male and female gold. In para-athletics and athletics, we got some gold. In kickboxing, we got the gold medal too,” Chikere stated with excitement. “The medals are increasing, and we are hopeful that by the end of the festival, we will be where we said we will be on the medal table.”

She reaffirmed her confidence in the quality and determination of Edo’s athletes, stressing that their performance so far reflects their preparation and hunger to win.

“We are not in Ogun State for jokes. We will definitely be at the top of the medal table, between the first and third — if not first. We are working towards that, and I’m very hopeful and optimistic we will have something to present before the Governor.”

Chikere also lauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for his unwavering support of Team Edo, noting that the athletes were given everything needed to prepare adequately.

“The support from the Edo State Government under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo has been beautiful. He promised that every medalist will be rewarded bountifully, and we will definitely make them proud,” she said.

While praising Ogun State for the quality of facilities provided at the festival, she raised concerns over the logistical challenge of athletes having to commute long distances between venues, especially from Babcock University to Abeokuta for early morning events.

“That is our only challenge. The venues are scattered and it’s very hectic. Some athletes have missed their events due to the transportation issues,” she lamented.

Despite the setbacks, Team Edo remains firmly focused on finishing strong at the national event, with their eyes set on making the Heartbeat of the Nation proud once again
