Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be without influential attacking midfielder Jennifer Echegini for their crucial final Group C fixture against Egypt at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after the Paris Saint-Germain star picked up her second yellow card of the tournament.
Sports247 reports that Echegini was cautioned during Nigeria’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia, triggering an automatic one-match suspension under the tournament’s disciplinary regulations.
The suspension means the 24-year-old will miss the decisive group-stage encounter, where the Super Falcons will be aiming to secure maximum points and finish the preliminary round on a positive note.
Echegini has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers in the competition, bringing creativity, composure and attacking drive to the midfield. Her ability to link play, carry the ball forward and create scoring opportunities has made her a vital component of head coach Justin Madugu’s tactical setup.
Her absence is expected to leave a significant gap in the Super Falcons’ midfield, particularly against an Egyptian side eager to end its campaign on a high. However, should Nigeria qualify for the knockout stages, Echegini will be available for selection from the quarter-finals onward.
Reacting to the development, Chief Executive Officer of Parrot Sports Group, Anthony Sunday Samuel, acknowledged the importance of the PSG midfielder but believes the situation could provide a valuable opportunity for the coaching staff.
“We’re surely going to miss Jennifer Echegini’s presence on the pitch because she has been one of the team’s most influential players in this tournament,” Samuel said.
“At the same time, her suspension presents an opportunity for Coach Justin Madugu to assess another player in a competitive environment and explore different tactical options ahead of the knockout stages. Squad depth is essential in a tournament like the WAFCON, and this is the time for other players to step up.”
Samuel added that Nigeria possesses enough quality across the squad to cope with Echegini’s absence and urged the remaining players to deliver a disciplined performance against Egypt.
With a place in the knockout rounds within reach, the Super Falcons will be hoping to overcome the temporary setback and maintain their momentum before welcoming Echegini back for the business end of the competition.
