Super Falcons News: Gift Okunwa-Igunbor Says Lack Of Friendlies Won’t Hurt Nigeria Before WAFCON

Former Super Falcons international Gift Okunwa-Igunbor has dismissed concerns that the Nigeria women’s national team could struggle due to a lack of recent friendly matches ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking on the team’s preparations, Okunwa-Igunbor explained that many Super Falcons players remain active with their clubs and continue maintaining competitive fitness through regular football.

“The players are still active with their clubs,” she said.

According to the former Falconets assistant coach, the concerns surrounding the team mainly stem from the fact that the squad has not gathered together recently.

“People are worried because the team hasn’t camped together lately,” she implied.

Okunwa-Igunbor stressed that consistent club football still provides valuable match sharpness and competitive rhythm for the players.

“League football keeps them in shape,” she noted.

The former international also expressed confidence in the judgment and planning of the coaching crew ahead of upcoming competitions.

“I trust the technical crew,” she added.

She believes the strong performances of Nigerian players abroad will positively influence the team once they regroup for national assignments.

“The players’ club form will help the team,” she stressed.

The Super Falcons continue preparing for important continental and global qualification matches in the coming months.

“The expectations will always remain high,” many football observers believe.

For Okunwa-Igunbor, the message is clear.

The lack of friendlies is not ideal.

But active players can still remain competitive.

And the Super Falcons should not be underestimated.

Because experienced players often carry their club form directly into international football.
