Super Falcons Eye Early Quarter-Final Qualification Against Botswana in WAFCON Clash

Group leaders Nigeria are poised to secure an early ticket to the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) when they face Botswana in their second group game on Thursday night in Casablanca.

Buoyed by a dominant 3-0 opening win over Tunisia, the Super Falcons will look to continue their fine form against a Botswana side still licking their wounds from a narrow 1-0 loss to Algeria.

The match, scheduled for 8pm at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, could seal Nigeria’s progression to the knockout stage with a game to spare.

Head coach Justine Madugu has maintained that his team remains laser-focused on what he calls “Mission X” – the quest to win a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

“As I said before the commencement of the tournament, we remain focused on our Mission X and we believe that victory over Botswana is a huge possibility. We are taking it one match at a time without taking any team for granted,” Madugu told journalists ahead of the clash.

The last time both teams met – at the 2022 edition in Morocco – Nigeria cruised to a 2-0 win courtesy of goals from Ifeoma Onumonu and Christy Ucheibe. This time around, a refreshed Nigerian side, featuring the likes of Rinsola Babajide, Jennifer Echegini, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Esther Okoronkwo (Woman of the Match against Tunisia), are expected to offer even greater firepower.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Barcelona star Asisat Oshoala, and Toni Payne will likely lead the attacking charge, while midfield trio Ucheibe, Halimatu Ayinde, and Echegini are tipped to control the tempo.

In defence, Chiamaka Nnadozie remains the dependable last line, shielded by experienced centre-back Osinachi Ohale and fullbacks Michelle Alozie, Ashley Plumptre, and Tosin Demehin.

Botswana, meanwhile, will be eager to bounce back from their loss to Algeria but must overcome the attacking threat and depth of a well-drilled Nigerian team.

Victory for Nigeria will not only confirm their place in the quarter-finals but also reinforce their credentials as tournament favourites in Morocco.
