Super Falcons Captain Ajibade Cites Jay-Jay Okocha’s Legacy After Joining Echegini in PSG

Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has credited Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha as one of the inspirations behind her decision to join Paris Saint-Germain Féminines.

Okocha, who made his mark with PSG’s men’s team in the late 1990s, remains a powerful influence on Nigerian players aspiring to shine in Europe.

Ajibade completed her dream switch to the French capital on Monday, August 26, 2025, signing a two-year contract that will keep her at the club until 2027.

PSG confirmed the arrival of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) winner and tournament MVP in an official statement.

Speaking to PSG TV after putting pen to paper, the former Atlético Madrid forward described the move as a fresh challenge and an opportunity to evolve both on and off the pitch.

“It’s a new challenge, especially when you come into this kind of prestigious club with amazing talent, amazing players, and amazing people. I’ve got the opportunity to grow as a player and as a person. I believe it’s the place for me to evolve and become the best version of myself,” she said.

Ajibade also highlighted PSG’s global appeal and strong brand identity as part of what drew her to Paris. She praised the club’s history, values, and reputation for helping players develop into world-class stars.

The Nigerian international will not be alone in Paris, as she joins national teammate Jennifer Echegini, a presence she believes will ease her integration into the squad.

Reflecting on Okocha’s enduring impact in France, Ajibade noted that the former Super Eagles captain left a legacy that continues to inspire Nigerian footballers.

“PSG has a mark in Nigeria because of Okocha with his tremendous skills. For us, he’s an icon, a legend—we don’t joke with him. PSG is like family back home in Nigeria, and many of us, boys and girls, dream of playing here because of what he achieved.”
