Super Eagles Slip to 44th in FIFA Rankings, Retain Top 5 Spot in Africa Despite Setback

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped one place to 44th in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, underscoring the team’s recent struggles in international competitions.

The dip comes after a series of mixed results in World Cup qualification fixtures that failed to build on the momentum of their previous climb.

In April, the three-time African champions were ranked 43rd globally, buoyed by impressive performances earlier in the year.

However, inconsistency in recent outings—particularly in crucial qualifiers—has cost them valuable ranking points, reflecting a slight but notable decline.

Despite the setback, Nigeria remains firmly among Africa’s football elite, retaining fifth position on the continental ladder. Morocco leads the African pack, holding strong at 12th in the world.

They are followed by Senegal (18th), Egypt (34th), and Algeria (36th), all of whom have shown greater consistency on the international stage in recent months.

Globally, Argentina continues to dominate the rankings, maintaining their number one position, ahead of Spain (2nd) and France (3rd), both of whom also held steady in this latest update.

Nigeria’s current position still places them above some of their key continental rivals. Ghana, who have struggled in recent games, sit in 76th place, while South Africa are 56th, both trailing behind the Super Eagles.

The September international window will present a critical opportunity for Nigeria to regain lost ground, with more 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches on the horizon.

A strong showing in those fixtures could see the Super Eagles climb back up the rankings and reassert their standing as a dominant force in African football.

While the ranking drop is a concern, it also serves as a wake-up call for the team and technical crew to refocus ahead of crucial competitive fixtures later in the year.
