All players who featured for the Super Eagles during Tuesday’s international friendly away to Russia have received more plaudits for what was described as ‘a remarkable performance that made Nigerians proud.’
Sports247 reports that the rain of accolades continues flowing, as a largely third-string Eagles’ squad, who shot into the lead after just ten minutes through a wonderful effort by Kelechi Iheanacho, romped back from 3-1 down to force a 3-3 draw in Nizhny Novgorod.
Goals by debuting substitute Peter Edokpolor and stand-in captain, Akor Adams, who also got off the Eagles’ bench in the second half, helped Nigeria pull off yet another dramatic away to Russua, akin to a 1-1 result between both teams in June last year.
With the Eagles and their fans still basking in the delight of Tuesday’s result, acting general-secretary of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, who was present at the match, added his voice to accolades for the players for the ‘remarkable performance.’
The NFF’s interim scribed pointed out that most important achievement for Nigeris during the encounter was that several young players debutted for the country in an away fixture against a top opponent and they were able to pull off a heartwarming result.
Ikpeme further stated that the resurgence brought back memories of Nigeria’s good old days, even as he described the team’s efforts and result as good signs ahead of their return to competitive action in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.
Ikpeme retorted gleefully, “This is the Super Eagles we want to see turn up each and every time. The NFF and the Nigeria football family and, I believe, all Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, are happy with this result.
“More than the result, the character displayed by the team was remarkable and made us proud. Given that we had so many young players with many of them winning their first caps, the result is heartwarming.”
Sports247 also reports that Tuesday’s result is a huge morale boost for Nigeria ahead of next month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations double qualifiers that will be home and away against Tanzania.
The Super Eagles will host the Taifa Stars at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on November 13th, then fly to Dar es Salaam for the second leg inside Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on November 17th.
