Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has said that Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup will largely depend on the team’s tactical discipline and technical execution in their upcoming playoff clash against Gabon.
Sodje, who represented Nigeria during several crucial qualification campaigns, emphasized that this stage of the journey is less about motivation and more about “system, structure, and efficiency.”

“At this point, tactics win you games,” Sodje told Sports247.ng. “The Super Eagles have the quality, but if the setup doesn’t match the players’ strengths, we’ll struggle. Everything now depends on how well the coach reads the game and how the players execute the plan.”
The former Reading and Portsmouth defender warned against complacency, noting that Gabon are technically sharp and physically mobile, capable of punishing any defensive lapse.
He urged Nigeria’s backline to stay compact and maintain communication, particularly in transitions, where the team has shown weaknesses in recent matches.
Sodje also called on the technical crew to prioritize team balance — ensuring that creative support reaches Victor Osimhen and the forwards, while maintaining defensive solidity.
“If the midfield fails to link play, Osimhen will keep chasing long balls,” he said. “We need movement, width, and coordinated pressing.”
Reflecting on his own experience in high-stakes fixtures, Sodje said playoff games demand mental toughness as much as skill. “One mistake, one moment of lost focus — that’s all it takes,” he said. “Nigeria must play like every minute matters.”
Despite the pressure, the 43-year-old remains confident in the team’s potential, describing the current Super Eagles squad as one of the most talented in recent years.
“If the tactics are right and the players stay focused, the FIFA World Cup ticket will be ours,” he concluded.
