Sunshine Queens Shine as Ondo First Lady Pre-Season Tournament Debuts with Flair

The maiden Ondo State First Lady Pre-Season Women’s Football Tournament kicked off in style at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure, ushering in a new era of visibility, empowerment, and competitive action for women’s football in the state.

Host team and 2015 FA Cup champions, Sunshine Queens FC, opened the curtain-raiser with a confident 2–0 win over Bravehearts Ladies of Benin.

After a tightly contested first half with both sides cancelling each other out, the Queens found their rhythm late on—Precious Edewor struck first before Alehiri Ayuba sealed the victory with a composed finish to secure maximum points. Bravehearts Ladies, despite the loss, earned plaudits for their grit and intensity.

Representing the Wife of the Ondo State Governor, Her Excellency Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adelami, praised the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) for driving an initiative that aligns with the state’s commitment to youth and female development through sport.

She noted that the tournament is more than a competition—it is a platform for empowerment, unity, and talent discovery.

ODSFA Chairman, Mr. Divine Ogbonnaya, emphasized that the pre-season event is strategically designed to prepare teams for upcoming campaigns while reinforcing the state government’s sports development blueprint.

He stressed that beyond results, the goal is to strengthen structures around women’s football and expand opportunities for young girls to thrive in the sport.

The action continues today (Monday), with Fortress Ladies vs Onimarg FC and Rock Crystal FC vs Sunshine Queens FC, as fans anticipate another thrilling day of football and emerging talent on display.

With the successful kickoff, the tournament has already positioned itself as a promising yearly staple—one that could elevate Ondo State into a leading hub for women’s football development in Nigeria.
