Sports Minister Urges Federations To Shape Sports Narrative

Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, has called on presidents of various National Sports Federations to collaborate with the ministry to enhance the overall performance of Nigerian athletes at the upcoming African, Olympic, and Paralympic Games in 2024.

During a technical meeting with the federation leaders, Senator Enoh emphasized the need for each federation to present its roadmap, medals projection, challenges, and strategies for podium performances at the upcoming games.

The meeting aimed to build on the gains achieved during a retreat held with different sports federations in December of the previous year.

The minister highlighted the importance of changing the narrative of the sports sector and consolidating on the gains made at the retreat.

He expressed hope that the meeting would be inclusive, participatory, and productive, with a focus on the country’s sports performance.

Senator Enoh reiterated his commitment to elevating the nation’s sports sector and sought the cooperation of stakeholders.

He expressed readiness to explore all available options, including holding periodic meetings and amending relevant laws to ensure adequate funding for sports, which has been a significant challenge for the past 30 years.

Funding was identified as the greatest challenge facing sports in Nigeria, and Senator Enoh assured that he would do everything within his power to overcome this obstacle.

He mentioned his discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the issue, emphasizing the strengthened resolve to find a solution.

The Minister commended the Ministerial Podium Performance Advisory Team, led by Professor Ken Anugweje, and the Presidents of various Sports Federations for their contributions.

The technical meeting provided an opportunity for federations to collaborate, brainstorm, and evolve strategies for success in upcoming sports competitions.
