Sporting Lagos and Rangers International strengthened their positions at the top of the 2026 ValueJet Cup standings on Monday, with both clubs securing second consecutive victories to move within touching distance of the semi-finals.
Sporting Lagos followed up their impressive 3-1 opening-day victory over hosts Remo Stars with another commanding performance, defeating Shooting Stars 2-0 to maintain their perfect start to the competition. Joel Ajibola opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Tamuno Kalio doubled the advantage in the 26th minute, giving Sporting Lagos a two-goal cushion they successfully protected until the final whistle.

The result takes Sporting Lagos to six points from two matches and keeps them at the top of the standings, having scored five goals and conceded just one. Their opening victory over Remo Stars had already established them as the early pace-setters, with Haruna Hadi scoring twice and Olalekan Malik adding another in a 3-1 win.
Rangers International have matched Sporting Lagos’ perfect record, also collecting six points from their opening two matches. After edging Inter Lagos 1-0 on the opening day, the Enugu-based side produced another 1-0 victory on Monday, this time against Doma United, with Ikechukwu Mgbemena scoring the decisive second-half header.
Rangers’ back-to-back clean-sheet victories have given the Flying Antelopes an equally strong start and placed them firmly among the leading contenders for a place in the last four.
Abia Warriors also strengthened their position with a 3-1 victory over Smart City, following their opening-day 1-1 draw against Rivers United. The result moves Abia Warriors onto four points and keeps them within realistic reach of the leading duo as the race for the semi-final places begins to take shape.
With Sporting Lagos and Rangers both sitting on six points, the two clubs have established an early advantage in a competition where the top four teams will progress to the semi-finals. Abia Warriors’ four-point haul keeps them in the chase, while the remaining sides will need strong results in their upcoming fixtures to close the gap.
The second-day results have therefore transformed the early standings into a fascinating battle, with Sporting Lagos and Rangers emerging as the teams currently best placed to secure semi-final berths. Sporting Lagos’ superior goal difference gives them the edge at the summit, while Rangers’ defensive record has been particularly impressive after conceding no goal across their opening two games.
The 2026 ValueJet Cup is being staged at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne from August 9 to 16 and features nine clubs competing in the tournament’s latest edition. The competition has become one of Nigeria’s prominent pre-season tournaments since its establishment in 2022, providing clubs with competitive preparation, an opportunity to assess new signings and a platform to build momentum before the domestic season.
This year’s tournament has also attracted additional attention with a reported ₦14 million prize pool, with nine clubs competing for the title.
The 2026 edition is also being played in memory of Otunba Tade Azeez, the late chairman of the ValueJet Cup, adding a commemorative dimension to this year’s tournament.
With the competition still in its early stages, Sporting Lagos and Rangers have put themselves in pole position, but Abia Warriors’ latest victory means the battle for the remaining semi-final places remains wide open. As the next round of matches approaches, every point—and potentially every goal—could prove decisive in determining which four clubs remain in contention for the 2026 ValueJet Cup title.
