Former Nigeria international Sam Sodje has dismissed growing criticism that the Super Eagles have become overly reliant on striker Victor Osimhen, insisting that there is nothing wrong with being called a “one-man team” — as long as the team keeps delivering results.
The debate resurfaced after Nigeria’s recent struggles, with many critics arguing that the national team leans too heavily on the Napoli forward for goals, drive, and inspiration. But Sodje believes the criticism is misplaced and rooted in misunderstanding.

“It’s not an issue at all. If people say we are a one-man team, so what? Every other player just needs to do his job,” Sodje said sharply.
The former Premier League defender explained that football has always had teams built around one exceptional talent — from Argentina around Messi to Portugal around Ronaldo — and there is nothing shameful about that, provided the rest of the squad supports the system.
“Just give him the passes. Create the chances. If Osimhen scores and Nigeria wins, nobody will remember who carried the team,” he said.
Sodje emphasised that the real problem is not reliance on Osimhen but the failure of other players to step up and provide the key service he needs to be effective. He argued that teamwork should not be mistaken for equal ability, noting that every squad has its superstar.
“Every team has a standout player. Osimhen is ours — so the others must rise and give him the platform to shine,” he stated.
He insisted that the label “one-man team” becomes irrelevant when results go in Nigeria’s favour. According to him, winning is what matters — not the narratives that follow.
“If we keep winning, nobody will care what they call us. All that matters is that the job is done,” Sodje added.
He urged the Super Eagles to focus on cohesion, movement, and creating goalscoring opportunities for their talisman rather than worrying about public perception. With AFCON around the corner, he believes Nigeria must fully maximise Osimhen’s strength.
