Lookman marked his first appearance in Atlético colours with a goal and an assist in the Copa del Rey quarter-final victory over Real Betis at the Estadio de La Cartuja, delivering a performance that quickly caught the attention of the Argentine tactician.
Speaking after the match, Simeone highlighted what sets the former Atalanta man apart from his teammates.
“Lookman is different from all the players we have, especially in one-on-one situations, but he also has associative play,” the Atlético coach said.
The 26-year-old’s versatility was another key point of emphasis, with Simeone noting his tactical value across multiple roles in the attacking setup.
“His profile allows us to use him in different positions, and his impact on the team was very good,” he added.
Lookman featured for 79 minutes and looked at ease from the opening exchanges, combining direct dribbling with intelligent movement and decision-making in the final third. His comfort on the pitch was evident, something Simeone believes will only improve with time.
“He felt comfortable, and hopefully we can help him become an even better footballer, just as he can help us grow as a team,” Simeone concluded.
For Lookman, the debut performance reinforced his status as one of Africa’s leading attackers, while for Atlético Madrid, it offered an early glimpse of how his pace, creativity and composure could add a new dimension to their attacking play as the season progresses.
