The coach of Nigeria’s Scrabble youth national team, Hassan Olujoko has revealed that the squad will camp for a week before heading out for their upcoming global competition, Sports247 reports.
Olujoko revealed this while speaking after Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) released a list of 21 players for this year’s world youth championship, holding from August 7th to 9th at Trademark Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Scrabble tactician also expressed optimism that the week-long camp will allow players in the squad to concentrate fully on preparations and building strategies towards the impending global contest.
He added that the Scrabble youth national team, which will travel out of Nigeria on August 5th, was selected following a two-day online competition of high standards that was supervised by the NSF’s technical director, Khaleel Adedeji.
While the national youth coach pointed out that he assisted Adedeji in organising the virtual qualification contest, he reasoned further that Nigeria’s best youth Scrabble players of the moment will represent the country in Nairobi.
Olujoko disclosed further, “The players will embark on a minimum one-week training camp to fine-tune their preparations before departing for Kenya. Seven officials will accompany the team to provide technical and administrative support throughout the championship.”
Sports247 also learnt that the impending championship will feature more than 200 players from over 40 countries, in a highly competitive contest among the world’s best young Scrabble players.
NSF’s spokesman, Maxwell Kumoye further disclosed that Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC) has assured the federation of government’s full support towards a successful outing in Nairobi.
He added that Nigeria’s squad, which is packed with experience, youth and ability, will seek to affirm the country’s reputation as a leading Scrabble playing nation during the championship in Nairobi.
