Samson Bolaji Ajayi Reflects on Breakthrough Season in Lithuania, Eyes Bigger Stage Ahead

Kwara-born, Kano-bred midfielder Samson Bolaji Ajayi has rounded off an outstanding debut season in Europe, establishing himself as one of FK Babrungas’ most consistent performers in the Lithuanian I Lyga (Second Division).

The 22-year-old, who joined the Plungė-based side in February 2025, quickly became a key figure in the heart of midfield — delivering a series of commanding performances that earned him praise from coaches, teammates, and fans alike.

Ajayi featured in 20 league matches this season, scoring five crucial goals, an impressive return for a defensive midfielder. His ability to combine physical power with tactical intelligence made him one of the standout players in Lithuania’s second tier.

Reflecting on his season, Ajayi described his journey as “a blessing and a learning curve.”

“When I joined Babrungas, I just wanted to prove myself and adapt quickly,” he said. “The league is tough, but I gave everything in every match. Scoring five goals and helping the team stay competitive is something I’m very proud of.”

Known for his energy, composure, and precise ball distribution, the Nigerian midfielder — fondly nicknamed “the engine” by fans of the Plungės Vilkai (The Wolves) — has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable box-to-box players in the division.

Ajayi’s success comes at a time when Lithuanian football continues to attract young African talents looking to build a path into the European scene. With several clubs already monitoring his progress, next season could see him take another big step in his career.

“This is just the beginning,” Ajayi said confidently. “I’m focused on improving and I believe the next season will open even bigger opportunities. My dream is to keep representing Nigeria proudly wherever I play.”

As the Lithuanian season draws to a close, Ajayi’s performances have positioned him among Nigeria’s most promising football exports in Eastern Europe — a name to remember as the 2025/2026 campaign approaches.
