Despite the Abia State Government’s clearance of 13 months’ salary arrears owed to Enyimba International FC, discontent is reportedly brewing within the Aba-based club following allegations of irregular and inconsistent disbursement of the funds to players.
Governor Alex Otti’s administration had earlier approved and released funds covering outstanding salaries and end-of-year entitlements, a move widely praised as a major intervention to stabilize the club and improve player welfare.
However, emerging reports suggest that the relief expected from the payment has been undermined by the manner in which the money was allegedly shared by the club’s management.
According to sources close to the team, some players reportedly received ₦100,000, while others were paid ₦70,000 from the funds released—amounts said to be far below expectations given the length of the arrears settled.
The alleged disparity has sparked dissatisfaction among players, many of whom are believed to be primary breadwinners for their families.
Football stakeholders and supporters have raised concerns that such deductions and inconsistencies fall short of professional football standards and risk damaging morale within one of Nigeria’s most decorated clubs.
They warn that poor handling of player welfare could discourage talent retention and undermine efforts to grow the domestic league.
Calls are now mounting for Enyimba’s management to provide clarity on the disbursement process, ensure transparency, and prioritize fairness in dealing with players’ earnings.
Observers note that while government intervention is commendable, sustainable progress in Nigerian football depends largely on accountable club administration and respect for players’ livelihoods.
As scrutiny intensifies, many will be watching to see whether Enyimba’s management addresses the concerns swiftly, in order to restore confidence and refocus attention on footballing success rather than off-field controversy.
