Rwandan Referee Gets Comoros-Nigeria Olympic Qualifier Nod

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has appointed a Rwandan officiating team for the Super Falcons’ 2028 Olympic qualifying first-leg clash against Comoros.

Henriette Byukusenge will take charge of the encounter as the centre referee, with fellow Rwandans Sandrine Murangwa and Regine Mukayiranga appointed as the first and second assistant referees, respectively.

Aline Umutoni, also from Rwanda, will complete the officiating team as the fourth official.

Namibia’s Fransiska Katjaimo has been named referee assessor for the fixture, while Burkina Faso’s Oumou Sy will serve as the match commissioner.

The appointment comes as Nigeria prepares to begin its second-round campaign in the race for a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The first-leg fixture is scheduled for Friday, October 9, at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, with CAF listing the encounter as Comoros versus Nigeria.

Although Comoros are officially the home side for the first leg, the match will be played in Nigeria because the island nation does not have a CAF-approved stadium available for the fixture.

The two teams will meet again at the same venue on Tuesday, October 13, with Nigeria listed as the home side for the return leg.

The Super Falcons enter the tie under interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen, who has been dealing with several player withdrawals ahead of the crucial Olympic qualifiers.

Asisat Oshoala, Ashleigh Plumptre and Oluwatosin Demehin are among the players unavailable for the encounter, while Belarus-based forward Blessing Okpe was called up late as a replacement for Oshoala.

Despite the absences, Eguavoen has expressed confidence in the players available to him and believes the replacements can make a meaningful contribution against Comoros.

Nigeria received a bye into the second round of the African Olympic qualifying series, while Comoros progressed after defeating Sudan in the opening round.

The Falcons will now look to secure an advantage in the first leg before the return fixture four days later, as they continue their bid to reach the 2028 Olympic Games.
