Jonathan Spiff’s journey from a 2025 Flying Eagles invitee to River Plate professional has taken another major step after the Argentine-born forward signed his first senior contract with the club.
Spiff, who has Nigerian roots through his father, was invited to join the Flying Eagles during preparations for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Although he did not make the final squad, his career in Argentina has continued to move forward.
The 19-year-old has now been rewarded by River Plate with a contract running until December 2028.
Spiff was born in Buenos Aires and joined River at just seven years old after impressing during a trial.
He gradually moved through the club’s youth teams before making his Reserve debut in February 2026. His goalscoring form then earned him a chance with the senior team.
In May, Spiff was named in River Plate’s squad for the Copa Sudamericana meeting with Bragantino. He came off the bench late in the 1-1 draw to make his first-team debut.
He also featured against Blooming in the competition before returning to the Reserve setup, where he continued to score goals and develop his game.
The new contract is a significant milestone for Spiff, particularly after the attention he received from both Nigeria and Argentina during his teenage years.
The forward remains eligible to represent Nigeria because of his Nigerian father, while his place of birth gives him eligibility for Argentina. For now, however, his club future is becoming clearer.
Spiff has secured a professional deal with River Plate and will now look to build on his first-team experience as he continues his rise in Argentine football.
Sports247 gathered that the new agreement keeps Spiff at River Plate until the end of 2028.
