The early goal lifted the spirits of the home fans, with Heartland pressing for a second to extend their advantage.

Rovers, however, remained resilient and gradually grew into the game, stringing together confident passes and creating chances. Their persistence was rewarded just before halftime when Inbus Otayul produced a moment of individual brilliance, dribbling past two defenders before slotting the ball calmly into the bottom corner to level the score at 1-1.

The second half saw end-to-end action as both teams pressed for a winner.

Heartland came close through a powerful header that rattled the crossbar, while Rovers almost grabbed a late winner through Otayul again, whose curling shot narrowly missed target.

With neither side able to find the breakthrough in regulation time, the match went straight to penalties.

Rovers FC held their nerve in the shootout, converting four of their spot-kicks confidently, while Heartland missed two crucial attempts.

The 4-1 shootout victory sealed Rovers’ triumph and their first-ever Dan Anyiam Trophy title.

The win was celebrated passionately by players, coaching staff, and traveling fans who turned out in large numbers to support the Calabar-based side.

For Heartland FC, it was a heartbreaking loss, but their spirited performance earned them plaudits as both teams demonstrated high-quality football and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

The one day novelty has become a stable annual ritual to celebrate the life and times of Imo State legendary Dan Anyiam.
