Rivers Hoopers Battle Rustiness For Regional Title

Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club of Port Harcourt are determined to put aside several months of inactivity and a long domestic hiatus to make an impact at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone 3 Championship Qualifiers.

Sports247.ng gathered that The Garden City outfit’s assistant captain, Ronald Alalibo is leading the charge for top form from the squad, but admits they have a lot of work to do in order to prove doubters wrong.

As the competitions hots up, ahead of the final on Saturday in Cotonou, Benin Republic, Alalibo said he is confident the team will do well.

The Hoopers will have to overcome stiff challenges from fellow-Nigerian club, Civil Defenders, as well as Elan Sportif of Benin Republic, Custom Braves of Ghana, AS Police of Niger Republic and Harbel Pointers of Liberia; but Alalibo said the team will do their best to win the qualifiers.

The Kings’ Men last played on the international circuit in 2011, but Alalibo said they will do their best to win the tournament.

Alalibo stated: “Though fans are not expecting much from us, because we have been rusty for 11 months, they still want to see a good result.

“For over seven years we have been out of the Continent with new legs, new players and new team.
“But a lot of our fans are still expecting us to have a good outing and we are hoping we will do well as long as we put our acts together.”
