Reality Check’ –  Yakubu Says Super Eagles Are Not AFCON Favourites in Morocco

Former Nigeria international Yakubu Aiyegbeni has insisted that the Super Eagles cannot be considered favourites to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, citing recent performances and the team’s style of play as major concerns.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, the former striker said Nigeria’s struggles in recent competitive matches make it difficult to place them among the leading contenders.

“Based on what we’ve seen recently, Nigeria are not favourites to win AFCON,” Yakubu said.

The former Everton forward pointed to what he described as Nigeria’s individualistic approach to games, warning that such a style rarely succeeds in tournament football.

“We rely too much on individual brilliance. AFCON is about team play, organisation and discipline,” he added.

Yakubu noted that Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup has further weakened confidence in the team’s readiness to challenge for continental honours.

“When you look at our recent displays, it’s hard to say we are fully equipped to win the tournament,” he said.

Instead, Yakubu identified other nations as being ahead of Nigeria in the race for the trophy.

“Ivory Coast, Egypt and host nation Morocco are ahead of Nigeria right now,” he stated.

He explained that these countries appear more balanced, tactically organised and mentally settled heading into the competition.

“Those teams look more prepared and consistent. That makes them stronger contenders,” Yakubu said.

Despite his reservations, the former striker stressed that his comments should not be mistaken for a lack of support.

“I will always support Nigeria. I want them to prove me wrong,” he added.

Yakubu acknowledged that AFCON tournaments can be unpredictable, but warned that relying on hope alone would not be enough.

“Anything can happen at AFCON, but you must earn success with performances,” he noted.

He urged the Super Eagles to focus on fixing their weaknesses rather than being distracted by expectations.

“If Nigeria want to go far, they must improve as a team, not as individuals,” Yakubu concluded.

As Nigeria prepare for AFCON in Morocco, Yakubu’s comments underline the pressure on the Super Eagles to show that they can rise above recent struggles and re-establish themselves among Africa’s elite.
