Nigeria are grouped alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania, a section many observers consider tricky following the Super Eagles’ struggles during the World Cup qualifiers. However, Oliseh insists that doubts from outside should not overshadow Nigeria’s quality.
“People will feel they have a chance against Nigeria because of what happened in the World Cup qualifiers,” Oliseh said.
The former midfielder admitted that Nigeria’s recent setbacks have changed how opponents view the team, but maintained that the Super Eagles still possess enough quality to dominate their group.
“Yes, the perception has changed, but Nigeria still has the players and experience to top this group,” he added.
Oliseh explained that AFCON tournaments often reset narratives, giving teams the opportunity to reassert themselves regardless of past disappointments.
“AFCON is a different competition. What matters is how you show up when the tournament starts,” he noted.
The former coach stressed the importance of focus and discipline, especially against opponents who may approach games against Nigeria with extra motivation.
“Every team will be highly motivated. Nigeria must match that intensity from the first minute,” he said.
Oliseh also highlighted the importance of a strong start, warning that early slip-ups could complicate progression.
“The first game is always key. Win it, and confidence grows. Lose it, and pressure increases,” he stated.
Despite acknowledging the competitive nature of the group, Oliseh remained firm in his belief that Nigeria can emerge as group winners.
“If Nigeria play to their strengths and stay organized, they should finish top of the group,” he said.
He urged the players to ignore external noise and focus on restoring belief through performance.
“The only way to silence doubts is to deliver on the pitch,” Oliseh concluded.
As AFCON approaches, Oliseh’s confidence offers reassurance that, despite scepticism, Nigeria still has the tools to assert dominance and begin their campaign strongly in Morocco.
