Former Super Falcons winger Stella Mbachu has admitted that Nigeria’s build-up to the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) fell short of expectations but insists the shortcomings should not be used as an excuse for the team’s performances.
The Super Falcons entered the tournament with limited high-profile international friendly matches compared to several of their rivals, a situation that drew criticism after the opening defeat to Malawi.
Speaking on the team’s campaign, Mbachu acknowledged that better preparation could have helped the defending champions but stressed that the quality within the squad remains unquestionable.
“Our preparations were not ideal, and quality friendly matches would certainly have helped the team. But that shouldn’t become an excuse because these players have been active with their clubs and know what is expected at this level,” Mbachu said.
The former Nigeria international urged both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the players to learn valuable lessons from the experience and focus on the task ahead.
“Everyone has to learn from what has happened. The federation, the coaching staff and the players must put the past behind them and work together because the objective of winning the trophy is still achievable,” she added.
Mbachu also appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Falcons, insisting the players need encouragement rather than criticism as they pursue another continental title.
Nigeria revived its campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia and will conclude the Group C campaign against Egypt on Wednesday, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
The former winger believes unity, improved performances and continued support from fans will be crucial if the Super Falcons are to remain on course for a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
