Team Nigeria fencer Adebodunrin Thomas has set her sights on reaching the last 16 at the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships, expressing confidence that months of intensive preparation have positioned her to compete with some of the best fencers in the Commonwealth.
The championships, scheduled to be held in Lagos from August 9 to 14, will bring together elite fencers from across the Commonwealth, with Nigeria hosting the competition for the first time. The event is expected to serve as a major platform for the country’s growing fencing programme.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Thomas said she is eager to test herself against world-class opponents on home soil.
“My target is to reach the last 16. I know it won’t be easy because the competition will be very strong, but I’ve prepared well, and I’m ready for the challenge,” Thomas said.
The Nigerian fencer credited her recent improvement to consistent daily training and the technical guidance she has received from her coach.
“We’ve been training every day, and Coach Jane has introduced new techniques that have really improved my confidence and understanding of the sport. I’m looking forward to putting everything into practice during the competition,” she added.
Thomas believes competing in front of a home crowd will provide extra motivation as she seeks to make a strong impression against some of the world’s leading fencers.
The Commonwealth Fencing Championships will also offer Nigerian athletes a valuable opportunity to gain international experience while measuring their progress against top-level opposition ahead of future continental and global events.
With preparations entering the final phase, Thomas remains optimistic that hard work, discipline and home support will help her achieve her goal of reaching the knockout rounds and further establish herself as one of Nigeria’s promising fencing talents.
