The wait continues for Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the much-anticipated draw for the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers to August 5—just four days before the tournament kicks off.
Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the sudden shift adds a layer of uncertainty for clubs across Africa preparing for their regional battles in a bid to qualify for the fifth edition of the continent’s premier women’s club competition. Teams from all six CAF sub-regions—WAFU-B, WAFU-A, CECAFA, COSAFA, UNAF, and UNIFFAC—must now recalibrate their preparations without knowing their group-stage opponents.

For Bayelsa Queens, champions of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), the delay is a high-stakes curveball. The Prosperity Girls are slated to compete in the WAFU-B Zonal Qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire, where they aim to become the first Nigerian side to win the title twice. They previously lifted the regional crown in 2022.
“This postponement is not ideal, but we’re staying focused,” a team official told reporters on Tuesday. “We’ll be ready no matter who we face.”
Nigeria’s domestic dominance in women’s football is unquestionable—the Super Falcons have clinched 10 of the 13 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) titles. Yet, ironically, no Nigerian club has managed to replicate that success at the CAF Women’s Champions League level since its inception in 2021.
As Bayelsa Queens gear up for their August 9 opener, the draw’s new date leaves them and other contenders little time to analyze their opposition. The compressed timeline could intensify the competition, making early tactical adaptability and squad depth more critical than ever.
The stakes are high, the draw is looming, and Nigeria’s flagbearers are more determined than ever to break the Champions League jinx. For Bayelsa Queens, this is more than qualification—it’s a shot at rewriting history.
