Pinnick: Nigeria to Surpass Morocco With World-Class Football Pitches in 18 Months

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick, has expressed strong optimism about the future of football infrastructure in the country, declaring that Nigeria will soon boast playing surfaces of a higher standard than those to be used at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Pinnick revealed that the same technical team responsible for developing Morocco’s world-class pitches is already on ground in Nigeria, working towards a comprehensive upgrade of selected stadiums across the country.

According to him, at least four pitches will be transformed within the next 18 months to meet the elite standards seen in Morocco.

“The team behind Morocco’s world-class pitches is already in Nigeria. In the next 18 months, we will have four pitches matching that same Moroccan standard,” Pinnick said.

He listed Warri City Stadium in Delta State, two stadiums in Bayelsa State, Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja as the venues set to benefit from the planned upgrades.

The development comes amid long-standing concerns over poor playing surfaces in Nigeria, which have often attracted criticism from players, coaches, and football stakeholders.

Pinnick’s assurance raises hopes that the country is finally taking decisive steps toward addressing one of its most persistent football challenges.

If successfully delivered, the pitch upgrades are expected to improve match quality, enhance player safety, and boost Nigeria’s prospects of hosting major continental and international football events in the future.

As expectations rise, football stakeholders will be watching closely to see if the ambitious timeline translates into tangible improvements on the ground, potentially ushering in a new era for Nigerian football infrastructure.
