Oyo State Gears Up for Gateway 2025 with 421-Member Contingent and Enhanced Athlete Welfare

Oyo State is set to make a strong impact at the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged “Gateway 2025,” scheduled to take place from May 16 to 30, 2025, across multiple cities in Ogun State, including Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, Sagamu, and Ikenne.

During a press briefing at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Adamasingba, Ibadan, the Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Honourable Wasilat Adegoke, announced that the state will be represented by a delegation comprising 320 athletes, 65 coaches, and 36 officials. The team will compete in 32 sporting events, covering all 27 compulsory and five optional sports.

Adegoke disclosed that Governor Seyi Makinde has approved a minimum wage of ₦80,000 for all contract-based athletes, coaches, and sports officers — a decision she described as a major morale booster. “This gesture of support from the governor is sure to motivate our team not only at the festival but beyond,” she said.

She also assured that athletes who win medals—gold, silver, or bronze—will receive instant rewards, with additional measures in place to ensure their comfort and welfare throughout the competition. Adegoke expressed optimism about the team’s preparedness and projected a commendable outing for the state.

Meanwhile, the Executive Assistant on Sports Development, Engr. Akin Akinleye, urged team members to maintain discipline and uphold Oyo State’s image, assuring them that excellence and dedication would be duly rewarded.

As part of the lead-up to the games, the symbolic “Torch of Unity” will be presented to Governor Makinde on May 13 to boost public awareness and enthusiasm ahead of the festival.
