Oyedeji Rejects Tenure Extension Claims, Insists NBBF Constitution Must Be Respected

Former Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) board member, Olumide Oyedeji, has dismissed speculations suggesting his tenure remains valid beyond January 2026, insisting that constitutional provisions—not convenience or sentiment—must guide leadership in Nigerian basketball.

Oyedeji made his position clear during a phone interview with the press today , where he addressed ongoing debates surrounding the NBBF board’s tenure timeline.

According to the former D’Tigers star, his mandate officially ended on January 31, 2026, exactly four years after his election.

“I was elected on January 31, 2022, and my tenure expired on January 31, 2026. I am not one of those clamouring for an extension till October or hiding behind inauguration dates,” Oyedeji stated.

He emphasized that the NBBF constitution is unambiguous on when a board’s tenure begins and ends, stressing that elected officials must uphold the rules they swore to protect.

“Tenure begins immediately after election. As someone who has taken an oath to uphold our constitution, I cannot betray that trust by acting outside its provisions. Personal interest must never come before the rules of our association,” he added.

Oyedeji’s firm stance has drawn commendation within basketball circles, with many hailing his clarity and principled leadership at a time when governance issues continue to challenge Nigerian sports administration.

Reaffirming his commitment to due process, the former NBA player said respect for institutional frameworks remains non-negotiable.

“I remain committed to respecting the constitution that governs our great organisation,” he reiterated.

The development comes at a time of personal and professional milestone for Oyedeji, who was recently elected Secretary General of the World Olympian Association, becoming the first African to occupy the prestigious position.

The historic appointment further highlights his growing influence in global sports governance and reinforces his reputation as a respected voice for integrity, accountability, and development.

As Nigeria celebrates one of its most accomplished sports ambassadors on the world stage, stakeholders will be watching closely to see Oyedeji bring the same constitutional discipline, leadership values, and trailblazing spirit to his new international role.
