One-cap Nigerian stiker, Owen Eric Damilola Oseni has received words of sympathy from his coach at Plymouth Argyle of England, Tom Cleverley, following another injury that has ruled him out of action with the team for up to six weeks.
Sports247 reports that the badging striker, whose only match so far for the Super Eagles came during this year’s Unity Cup at The Valley in London, was forced off the pitch with an ankle injury after 33 minutes against Crystal Palace’s under-21 squad.
It’s a major setback for the 23-year-old Oseni, who previously played for Waterford, Derby County, Nuneaton Borough, Rushall Olympic, Gateshead as well as Saint Mirren, and has impressed since joining The Pilgrims, for whom he hit 10 goals in 33 games last season.
His performances, so soon after joining Plymouth from St Mirren of Scotland last summer, earned him his Nigeria debut in May and Cleverley admitted that his team will miss the striker, but they have to take extra precautions due to his previous ankle problems.
“Because it’s an ankle he’s injured in the past, the specialist has advised we take a little bit more time to make sure that it heals properly and is as stable as it can be.
“I’m disappointed for him, because his season’s not got going. He missed a large part of pre-season, and then he’s trying to chase a little bit of fitness. Then, in a sort of nothing action of the game, chasing a ball into the channel.
“It was an important game that he played against Palace Under-21s and, unfortunately, he didn’t come out the other end of it fit; the defender falls on him and his ankle sprains,” an obviously disheartened Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon.
Sports247 reports further that this development marks a huge setback for Oseni, who was born in Ireland, but has dual citizenship of his country of birth and Nigeria, which invited him to the Super Eagles on May 8th, 2026 for the Unity Cup
Oseni thus became the first ever Irish-born player to feature for the Super Eagles and got his full international debut on May 26th, 2026, coming off the bench in the 77th minute of a 2-0 win over Zimbabwe in the first semi-final of the competition.
