Osun State is set for a major push in Olympic-style boxing as Deputy Governor Hon. Kola Adewusi has pledged full collaboration with the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) to reposition the sport and expand opportunities for young athletes across the state.
Adewusi made the commitment on Monday while hosting the NBF Vice President and Southwest representative, Hon. Omonlei Imadu, at his office in Osogbo. The Deputy Governor praised Imadu’s “proven track record and visionary leadership,” citing his success with the Yucateco Boxing League despite limited resources.

Positioning the initiative as part of the state’s youth-development agenda, Adewusi said Osun would work closely with the state Sports Commission to activate joint programmes with the NBF in the coming weeks.
He emphasized that Olympic-style boxing offers a high-impact pathway for talent discovery, community engagement, and social empowerment.
“We trust Hon. Imadu’s commitment to revitalizing boxing in the Southwest and beyond. With the NBF onboard, we’ll elevate the sport in Osun and open new doors for our young people,” he said.
In his remarks, Imadu commended the Deputy Governor for his unwavering support for youth-driven sports initiatives. He disclosed that the NBF is finalizing plans for a nationwide rollout of Olympic-style boxing programmes designed to energize the sport from the grassroots.
“As the Southwest representative, my priority is securing state-level endorsement of our developmental projects. Osun’s readiness sets a strong precedent, and in the coming months, Olympic-style boxing nationwide will witness a beehive of activity,” Imadu stated.
He added that the federation will soon unveil a series of grassroots initiatives aimed at scouting, training, and nurturing the next generation of boxers across Nigeria.
The collaboration positions Osun as one of the early movers in the NBF’s renewed national boxing agenda, signaling a fresh chapter for the sport’s development in the region.
