Nigeria international Paul Onuachu will head into the final day of the Turkish Süper Lig season locked in a tense battle for the league’s prestigious Golden Boot award after going four consecutive matches without finding the net.

The towering Trabzonspor striker currently leads the scoring charts with 22 league goals and will be aiming to finish the campaign as Turkey’s top scorer when Trabzonspor host Gençlerbirliği in their final league match on Sunday.
Onuachu holds a narrow advantage over Eldor Shomurodov of İstanbul Başakşehir, who sits just one goal behind on 21, while Anderson Talisca of Fenerbahçe remains an outside contender with 19 goals.
The Nigerian forward has enjoyed a remarkable campaign for Trabzonspor, scoring 24 goals in all competitions and playing a crucial role in the club’s push for European qualification after missing out last season.
Having initially impressed during his loan spell from Southampton in the 2023/24 season, Onuachu returned permanently and has elevated his performances further this term, becoming one of the most feared strikers in the Turkish top flight.
A Golden Boot triumph would see the former KRC Genk striker enter Trabzonspor history as only the sixth player to win the award for the club.
He would also become just the third foreign player to achieve the feat after club legends Şota Arveladze and Alexander Sørloth.
Onuachu is also chasing another significant milestone.
His 22 league goals leave him within touching distance of Arveladze’s long-standing club record of 25 goals in a single Süper Lig season by a foreign player, while Sørloth netted 24 during the 2019/20 campaign.
The 31-year-old has however endured a slight dip in recent weeks, failing to score in his last four league appearances.
Nevertheless, with history and individual glory on the line, Sunday’s clash presents the Super Eagles striker with the perfect opportunity to finish the season on a memorable note.
