Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Bassey Akpan has described the national team’s goalkeeping department as one of the most sensitive positions in the squad, insisting that only top-quality players should be invited.

Reacting to the decision of Arthur Okonkwo to switch allegiance to Nigeria, Akpan welcomed the development but cautioned against assuming that playing in Europe automatically guarantees success at international level.
“It’s a different level,” he said.
According to Akpan, representing Nigeria comes with unique pressure and expectations that go beyond club football, regardless of where a player is based.
“You must prove yourself,” he implied.
While acknowledging that Okonkwo’s arrival could strengthen competition, the former goalkeeper was clear about one thing, the current hierarchy should be respected.
He maintained that Stanley Nwabali remains Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.
“He is still number one,” Akpan stressed.
For him, consistency, experience, and previous performances for the national team should carry significant weight in selection decisions.
Akpan also emphasized that competition should be healthy and based on merit, with every goalkeeper given the opportunity to earn their place through performance.
“It’s about quality,” he noted.
The debate around Nigeria’s goalkeeping options has intensified in recent months, with fans and analysts closely watching how the position evolves.
Akpan’s comments reflect a balanced perspective — welcoming new talent while defending established players.
As the Super Eagles continue their rebuilding process, the goalkeeping department is expected to remain a key area of focus.
Because in football, especially at the highest level, mistakes in goal can be costly.
And as Akpan insists, only the very best should be trusted with that responsibility.
