Omeruo’s Leganes Climb Out Of Relegation Zone

CD Leganes of Spain defender, Kenneth Omeruo is once again smiling at club level, following his club’s ascent from relegation waters in La Liga, sequel to victory against Deportivo Alaves.

Sports247.ng reports that Omeruo’s return to Spain after lining out for Nigeria on international duty paid off handsomely, as Leganes won his first match back, making the best of home advantage on Friday.

However, while Omeruo is smiling again with Leganes, their opponents are sulking, as Alaves missed the chance to jump to the top of the La Liga table, falling to a surprise 1-0 loss at struggling Leganes.

Victory would have taken Alaves above Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla into top spot ahead of the rest of the weekend’s games but Youssef En-Nesyri’s 42nd-minute goal proved the decider.

The result was enough to lift the hosts out of the bottom three and they merited the result after having 13 attempts on goal compared to six for their opponents.

En-Nesyri threatened early on with a header and then made the breakthrough three minutes before half-time with a left-footed shot after being set up by Jonathan Silva.

Leganes would surely have expected to face strong pressure from Alaves in the second half but it did not materialise and it was the hosts who came close to a second before an injury-time effort from Ibai Gomez flew just over the bar.
