Olopade Says Islamic Games Success Signals Nigeria’s Rebirth Plan for Global Podium Push

Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Honourable Bukola Olopade, has declared that Nigeria’s strong outings at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh are early proof of the country’s renewed long-term strategy to return to global medal relevance ahead of the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

Speaking at the Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Stadium, Olopade said the performances — particularly from athletes making their first appearance at a major international competition — show that Nigeria’s developmental blueprint is beginning to take shape.

According to him, the Islamic Games are more than a medal hunt; they are a deliberate talent-incubation ground designed to elevate prospects identified at the National Sports Festival and bring invited junior athletes into the national pipeline.

“This platform is helping us shape the future,” he said. “We’re not just chasing medals. We’re building athletes who will dominate globally in the coming years.”

Olopade emphasized that the Commission’s roadmap for revitalising Nigerian sports has full backing from the Presidency, noting that consistent support from the President is gradually reshaping athletes’ confidence and trust in national programs.

The DG also applauded foreign-based stars who honoured national invitations despite being out of season, singling out Obiageri Pamela Amaechi, Chioma “CiCi” Onyekwere, Elizabeth Anyanacho, and others for “unwavering commitment” to the country.

He acknowledged ongoing gaps but insisted that reforms are already underway — from improved kit quality, to timely bonus payments, to a forthcoming special package for elite athletes.

“We know we’re not yet at our destination, but the narrative is changing,” he said. “If our athletes keep the faith, Nigeria’s best sporting days are right ahead.”
