Ogun Becomes Sports Investment Magnet — NSC DG Hails Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Vision

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for turning Ogun State into a beacon of Nigeria’s sports economy, citing the state’s investment in infrastructure, talent development, and international hosting capacity.

Speaking at the opening day of the African U18/U20 Athletics Championships at the newly refurbished MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Olopade described the venue and event as the result of “visionary leadership, bold investment, and an unwavering commitment to youth empowerment.”

“Governor Dapo Abiodun has not only revived sports in Ogun State — he has made it a thriving hub for Africa’s sports economy,” said Olopade. “The youth of this state will forever remember this era. Abeokuta is now an international sports destination.”

A Championship That Reflects a Larger Vision

The ongoing CAA Championships, which have drawn elite junior athletes from across Africa, are the most high-profile track and field event hosted in Ogun State in over a decade. The success of the Day 1 proceedings has already begun validating the state government’s multi-billion naira sports revival project — including renovations, athlete programs, and strategic partnerships.

Governor Abiodun’s efforts to integrate sports into Ogun’s economic agenda are paying off, with the state now attracting both continental tournaments and private sector interest in sports business, branding, and development.

The transformation of the MKO Abiola Sports Arena into a world-class facility is central to Ogun’s emergence as a sports hub. From modern tracks to athlete-friendly amenities, the arena now meets international standards — something that was unthinkable just a few years ago.

“It’s not just about hosting a championship,” Olopade added. “It’s about building a sustainable sports ecosystem — one where talent meets opportunity, and dreams meet structure.”

Ogun’s Rising Profile in Sports Development
Ogun’s sports revival under Governor Abiodun includes:

Renovation and construction of sporting facilities across key local governments.

Talent identification and grassroots programs through schools and communities.

Partnerships with national and international sports federations.

Hosting major sporting events to boost tourism and youth employment.

As Day 2 of the Championships kicks off, all eyes remain on Abeokuta — not just for medal counts, but as a model for how visionary governance can turn sports into a tool for economic growth and social impact.
