Ocheho: Handball Federation Has Weathered All Storms

Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) president, Sam Ocheho says he is happy that the body has been able to weather a lot of storms and come out victorious.

Sports247.ng reports that Ocheho is taking stock of the handball body’s executive committee’s activities in the past year, and declared that they deserve a pass mark tor turning the tide around.

Ocheho recalled that things were not so smooth for Nigerian handball when he took over in 2017, but insists all is now well.

He also evaluated their achievements of 2018, and concluded that they achieved beyond his expectations.

The HFN boss enumerated the challenges the HFN faced upon his arrival in office, but stressed that they surpassed all expectations in 2018.

The former Lagos State Handball chairman stated: “Last year we were able to do lots of competitions and attend international competitions.

“All these we did not because we had funds from the ministry but funds from sponsors, friends, personal funds we used to execute all these.

“The first year for me as the Handball Federation President I think we achieved more than I expected.

“I was looking at the medium to long term goal but a lot of things we have done in one year I am glad.

“I have achieved but, for me, it’s just the beginning. We have to make every year better than the previous year.

“Funding is always a challenge. The ministry and their lackadaisical attitude in terms of funding the sport also was a major challenge.

“Also, the economy is not a growing economy it’s been stagnating. A lot of businesses are not prospering (and) it is kind of affecting sports.”
