Obafemi Reveals Motivation Behind Southampton Deal

Southampton of England youngster, Michael Obafemi has disclosed that love among all the club’s players and encouragement from older ones in the squad motivated him to sign a new contract with The Saints.

Sports247.ng learnt that, in the wake of his agreement to put pen on paper in a fresh deal that will keep him at St. Mary’s Stadium for three and a half years, the Nigerian-born Ireland international is giving thanks to his pals for standing by him.

The 18-year-old Obafemi, who made his first-team debut in January, has extended his stay until 2023 and thanked his senior teammates for their guidance that is helping him grow at Southampton.

Obafemi said: “I’m happy that it’s done and now I’m looking to move forward. I’ll always be thankful to the club for sticking by me.

“I just want to show everyone what I’ve got. I’m determined to show the fans and everyone at the club why I’ve been given a (new) deal.

“All the players in the dressing room have helped me get to where I am. They speak to me daily.

“It’s so helpful as a young player to get advice – they’ve been where I am now. They interact with you, and aren’t shy to get involved.

“Being around the older lads, you realise just how difficult it is to make it as a player in the Premier League.

“I’m thankful to them for any advice. It’s helped me grow into a man and become a proper professional.

“One of my short-term aims is to get more minutes and get back into the starting line-up. I want to give it everything I’ve got.”
