Nwobodo, a former assistant skipper, returns to the Flying Antelopes after a short stint in the Rwandan top flight. His leadership qualities and deep understanding of the club’s culture were key factors behind his immediate elevation to captaincy, according to the club’s General Manager and CEO, Barrister Amobi Ezeaku.

The announcement was made shortly after the team’s training session at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium—fondly known as The Cathedral—signaling a renewed sense of purpose for the Enugu-based side.

“Chidiebere is a leader on and off the pitch. His return is timely, and we believe he embodies the vision and fighting spirit of Rangers,” said Ezeaku while addressing the players and technical crew.

As part of the new leadership structure, Austin Opara—who has impressed since his arrival from Plateau United—has been appointed assistant captain. Opara, known for his solid defensive presence and calm demeanor under pressure, is expected to provide strong support for Nwobodo.

Meanwhile, versatile midfielder Evans Ogbonda has been named team coordinator, a role that positions him as a key link between the technical staff and the squad.

The move is seen as a proactive strategy by Rangers to foster unity, discipline, and a winning mentality as they prepare for upcoming domestic and continental campaigns.

Rangers are expected to kick off their preseason tour later this month, with fans optimistic that the new leadership group will steer the club toward another title-winning season.
