NWFL 2021/22 : Four Star’ Edo Queens Humble Pelican Stars 4 Nil In Benin

Super Edo Queens FC on Wednesday evening took Pelican Stars to the cleaner in their last home match of the 2021/2022 NWFL Premiership regular season played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, to stamp their supremacy in Group A and solidify their beautiful run in the season as they humiliated Pelican Stars by 4 goals to nil in dominance fashion.

Wemimo Mathew led side didn’t take long to make their mark on the game with goals coming from Chioma Oliseh and Yemisi Samuel leaving Edo Queens 2-0 up by half-time.

Chioma Olise opened the flood gate in the 20th minute for the Obaseki Ladies with a header from a cross that the Pelican Stars goalkeeper had punched within the box

Four minutes after the opener, Pelican Stars were forced to sub off their goalkeeper due to an injury.

The 30th minute saw Samuel Yemisi latch on to a through ball – lobbing the ball over the Pelican Stars goalkeeper, to double the hosts’ lead.

31 minutes after the start of the second half, Odueke Omotoke, tripled the lead as she calmly finished off a pass from Yemisi Samuel, compounding the woes of the visitors.

The 76th minute had appeals of handball in the box of the visitors which the referee turned deaf ears to, but Adaobi Okah was brought down in the box seconds later right in front of e referee could not turn her eyes away but gave a penalty.

A few minutes later Oliseh Chioma, converted from the spot, her second for the game putting Edo Queens four goals up.

Pelican Stars failed to record a single shot on target all through the 90 minutes as the high defence line of Edo Queens ensured no dent on their clean sheet.

With qualification to the Super 6 already certain, Edo Queens are top of Group A with 26 points and a +16 goal difference.

Edo Queen’s head coach, Wemimo Mathew, said:
“One more game to go before we finish the league and after that, we still have a lot of work to do.”

“We can’t say we are ready now, we need some more training. You can see we missed a lot of chances and in the area of finishing, we need to work on it. In some areas, we still need to beef up the team.”

“All the players that we signed are all good that is why when you see some of our players go to national team assignment, they are all doing good, so we are all working together and we are on the same page.”

“Edo Queens just qualified for the Super 6, point of correction, we’ve qualified since, I think we were having three games on hand when we qualified. So today’s game was just for fun to entertain our home fans. So we’ve qualified even before our last game against Nassarawa Amazons.
