New Dawn For Nigerian Armwrestling As Samuel Olatunji Jackson Hails Government Backing, Targets More Gold Medals at African Games

President of the Nigeria Arm Wrestling Federation, Engr. Samuel Olatunji Jackson, has described the official inauguration of the federation’s board by the National Sports Commission (NSC) as a historic milestone, declaring that government recognition has opened a new chapter for grassroots development and international success.

Jackson, inaugurated alongside Secretary-General Ms. Dorathy Okpo Benard, expressed delight over the development, stressing that the recognition comes with greater responsibilities and renewed determination to popularise armwrestling nationwide.

“It is something of great joy that we finally have government backing. This is a major breakthrough for Nigerian armwrestling, but it also places enormous responsibility on us. Now that we have been officially inaugurated, we must get to work immediately,” Jackson stated.

He disclosed that the federation would intensify efforts to establish a stronger presence across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, focusing on grassroots talent discovery, youth participation and sustainable development.

“Our priority is to make armwrestling attractive to every Nigerian. We must reach the grassroots, strengthen our state associations and create opportunities for young talents to embrace the sport,” he added.

Looking ahead, Jackson revealed that Nigeria has already secured qualification for the African Games in Egypt, with another opportunity for additional qualification expected in Madagascar during the first quarter of next year.

“We have enough time to prepare properly. Our target is to win more gold medals than we achieved at the previous African Games. With early preparation, commitment and government support, Nigeria can achieve remarkable results,” he declared.

The federation president also commended the National Sports Commission leadership, particularly Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for strengthening sports administration and providing federations with a platform for growth.

Nigeria’s recent achievements at continental championships and para-armwrestling competitions have further reinforced confidence in the sport’s medal-winning potential.

Jackson maintained that the federation’s new leadership would prioritise athlete welfare, technical development, sponsorship and international exposure.

For Nigerian armwrestling, the inauguration represents more than official recognition; it signals the beginning of an ambitious journey towards greater continental dominance and global sporting excellence.
