President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, has applauded Team Nigeria’s weightlifters for surpassing the country’s medal performance from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
He described their achievements in Glasgow 2026 as a testament to the athletes’ hard work, discipline and the bright future of the sport in Nigeria.
Nigeria concluded the weightlifting competition with an impressive haul of three gold medals and one silver, improving on the two gold, one silver and three bronze medals won at Birmingham 2022.
The gold medals were won by Edidiong Joseph Umoafia (Men’s 71kg), Didih Omolola Onome (Women’s 53kg) and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal (Women’s 58kg), while Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed silver in the Women’s 48kg event.
Reacting to the team’s outstanding performance, Dr. Abdul commended the athletes for their dedication and commitment throughout the competition.
“Our weightlifters have made Nigeria proud. Their performances in Glasgow reflect the hard work, determination and sacrifices they have made over the years, and they deserve every bit of the success they have achieved,” Abdul said.
The NWF president also praised the coaches and support staff for their contribution, noting that the improved medal haul is evidence that Nigeria’s investment in athlete development is yielding positive results.
“This performance shows that Nigerian weightlifting is on the right path. It gives us confidence that the future of the sport is bright, and we will continue to provide the necessary support to help our athletes compete successfully on the world stage,” he added.
Nigeria’s success in Glasgow further strengthened its reputation as one of Africa’s leading weightlifting nations, with the team’s performances contributing significantly to the country’s overall medal tally at the Commonwealth Games.
Dr. Abdul expressed confidence that the achievements recorded in Glasgow would inspire the next generation of Nigerian weightlifters as preparations begin for future international competitions, including the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
