Rising sprint sensation Lucy Nwankwo delivered one of the standout performances on Day 1 of the African U18/U20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta, storming to a Personal Best of 11.80s (-0.5) to win Heat 3 of the women’s 100m.
The 15-year-old, a product of the Making of Champions (MoC) Academy, arrived at the championships with just one sub-12 second performance to her name — an 11.99s run at the MTN CHAMPS in Lagos.

But in front of a home crowd and continental opposition, she rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion, clocking the second-fastest time overall across all heats.
A visibly shocked Nwankwo was unaware she had shattered her previous mark until she was told, breaking into a wide smile moments after the announcement.
Currently in SS1, Nwankwo’s rapid progression is a testament to her development since relocating from Anambra State to Lagos just a year ago — a move that has clearly started to bear fruit.
With the semifinals up next, the teenager is quickly proving that she’s not just one for the future — she’s already making her mark now.
